Are you passionate about libraries, community service, and creating welcoming spaces for people to learn and connect?
We are looking for a Library Assistant to help deliver high‑quality library services to the Kaikōura District and support our community’s learning, information, and cultural needs.
This is a varied, hands‑on role suited to someone who enjoys working with people, thrives in a community environment, and takes pride in maintaining a vibrant and customer‑focused library service.
About the Role
In this role, you will assist in the day‑to‑day operation of library facilities across the district, ensuring services are efficient, accessible, and welcoming. You will support library systems, promote library services, maintain collections, and contribute to a safe and engaging environment for library users.
You will also play an important part in health and safety, records management, and civil defence readiness as required by Council.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the operation of library facilities across the district, maintaining a high standard of customer service
- Support the administration and maintenance of library systems and resources
- Promote library services and programs to the wider community
- Process, repair, and maintain library materials to a high standard
- Ensure library spaces are attractive, welcoming, and well presented
- Participate in relevant training and professional development
- Contribute to health and safety systems and Council emergency preparedness, including civil defence training as required
- Carry out other reasonable duties as requested by the Community Services Manager
About You
We are looking for someone who enjoys working with people and brings a proactive, flexible, and positive approach to their work.
You will ideally have:
- Highly developed interpersonal and customer service skills, with strong cultural awareness
- Well‑developed computer skills, particularly in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- The ability to manage competing priorities and consistently deliver high‑quality work
- Discretion and the ability to handle confidential information appropriately
- Initiative, creativity, and the ability to think ahead and problem‑solve
Experience & Added Advantages
- Preferred: Previous experience working in a library or similar customer‑focused environment
- Bonus: A creative flair, including experience creating staff newsletters or internal communications
- Experience in an administration or local government environment is desirable but not essential

Skills or Qualifications Required
- Local Government Experience
